Big increases in cattle herd numbers predicted

Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) first industry update for 2022 is predicting a more than one million herd rebuild and an 11 per cent slaughter increase in 2022.

The MLA is forecasting that these increases will see Australian export volumes of more than 2 million tonnes over the course of the year.

While the MLA is anticipating a faster increase in cattle herds due to abundant pasture and growing conditions in NSW and Victoria, Queensland’s rebuild has also been aided by excellent spring and summer rainfall events.

However, the MLA is still watching to see that a positive seasonal wet season rains in the northern parts of Queensland to ensure the steady rebuild of herds into 2023.

Reliable transportation and a favourable valuation on the Australian dollar are seen as key factors in delivering what is an increasingly favourable outlook. For more information visit: www.mla.com.au
